Fantasy Hockey Sleeper Picks for 2011-12

If you've played fantasy hockey (or any fantasy sport) for long, you know that you don't typically win a season based on those first few rounds of picking superstars. For the most part, those picks all even out. It's the sleepers that can take an ordinary team and propel it to greatness. Finding that hidden gem, late in the draft, that finishes in the top 10 can make all the difference in the world. So what are you looking for as you scan your eye deep down the list of last year's stats? A few factors come to mind:

1. Young, rising stars who are being promoted into a bigger role. For many players, it's simply a matter of opportunity. Consider Claude Giroux last season. No one doubted the talent. He just had too many stars to leapfrog to get to 20 minutes a game. When the hole opened up, he seized it.

2. Down and back again. Some players saw a decline in recent years, due to injury or other factors. When they're set to return, they can often be overlooked and undervalued. This can also ring true for players who left to play in the KHL for a time and are now returning to the NHL.

3. Young guns who peaked early, then slid a bit. Often times, a rookie will burst out of the gate, then level off in their 2nd or 3rd season. We tend to write these players off by their fourth year, when in reality, that's just the time when we should expect them to hit their prime. Here is where you can find some real value.

GOALIES

Tuukka Rask (BOS)
Even in the midst of Thomas's superhuman season, Rask managed to find his way into 29 games last season. That shows how serious the Bruins are about getting him playing time. Add in the extended playoff run, and Boston will turn to him more and more in 2011-12. Should Thomas come down to earth, or sustain another injury, Rask will instantly propel to a top 10 option. Don't be afraid to draft him, as he'll get enough starts either way to warrant the selection.

Curtis McElhinney (PHO)
With Bryzgalov gone, the starting gig in the desert is completely up for grabs. McElhinney seems like a fair bet to edge out LaBarbera and Smith for the early starts. This one won't be decided until the first puck drops. If you're looking for a late-round gamble in a deep league desperate for goalie starts, throw McElhinney on your list.

DEFENSE

Jonathan Blum (NAS)
Blum was a first round pick in 2007, but has (and will continue to) struggled to earn top minutes on the crowded Nashville defense. He has the skills to put up big numbers. He just needs the opportunity to make it happen. He could be a good sleeper to keep an eye this season.

Alex Edler (VAN)
Edler missed the 2nd half of the season with a back injury. He returned in the playoffs, and while he didn't produce much offensively, the important thing is that he showed himself to have fully recovered. With Ehrhoff out of town, the Canucks will be counting on Edler to play top minutes. Expect 40+ points from him in 2011-12.

Ryan Whitney (EDM)
Whitney started last season on a tear, with 27 points in 35 games. A severe ankle injury ended his season prematurely. Most fantasy owners have probably forgotten about him at this point. He should be ready for the start of the season. Look for Whitney to be the lone source of hope on the Edmonton defense this season once again.

OFFENSE

Tyler Kennedy (PIT)
With all the big names that wear a sweater in Pittsburgh, it's easy to overlook the 5'11'' winger who wears #48. Penguin fans know that he's the one thing that kept the offense alive when the plague hit last spring. Kennedy has never passed on a chance to shoot the puck, and given enough time on the wing with Crosby or Malkin, he has a good shot at cracking 30 goals sometime soon.

Vincent Lecavalier (TB)
Hard to paint a $10 million dollar center as a sleeper, but his declining point totals have him falling out of sight for fantasy players. Down the stretch and into the playoffs, he looked a bit more like the Vinnie of old. He registered 17 points in the last 14 regular season games. He also played above a point a game through the long playoff run last spring.

James Neal (PIT)
Neal was a shocking disappointment upon arriving in Pittsburgh last spring. The goal scorer in Dallas suddenly went dry with the Pens. Perhaps the summer will be good for his psyche and he'll start things fresh in the fall. Should he find significant time along side Malkin and/or Crosby, the theory is he can be a lethal sniper. He should be available late in the draft and is worth a shot.

Tyler Seguin (BOS)
There's a chance that Seguin won't even make the team this fall. There's a better chance he'll be a significant fantasy factor by the end of the season. He showed flashes of brilliance in the playoffs that justify his #2 overall selection in 2010. His versatility will help his cause as well, since he can slide into the center or wing position. With Horton and Savard still reeling from concussions, it seems likely that Seguin can fill a scoring void for Boston this season.

Paul Stastny (COL)
Stastny's totals in 2010-11 were disappointing after the standard his set for himself in his first few seasons. He dropped from 79 points to 57, yet he actually scored more goals last year. His low point total will cause many owners to undervalue him at this year's draft. He could easily turn it on and crack 80 points this season. Prime sleeper candidate to target mid-draft.

A few other guys who will be undervalued based on last season's performance, but are hard to paint as "sleepers" to consider as you draft:

  • Nicklas Backstrom (WAS)

  • Pavel Datsyuk (DET)

  • Ryan Getzlaf (ANA)

  • Ilya Kovalchuk (NJ)

How to Handicap Football Like The Pros

Hello my name is Chris Liput professional handicapper with Fast Actin Handicappin. We provide pro and college football picks for the sports investor. This is a good article I found on the Coaches corner website and thought it was worth sharing with those who like to bet or do there own football gambling picks. I always recommend hiring a handicapping service such as Fast Actin Handicappin. Handicapping football takes a lot of time. But if you have free time, and don't want to pay for a service then here our some tips from the below article that may help you. Enjoy the read below.

It's Friday evening, and you've resigned yourself to some "serious handicapping" before your big football weekend. Said handicapping consists of an hour or two of studying the past week's injuries and line moves, and the past month's trends. You allow time for intermittent snack breaks and other unexpected disturbances, but when you sit back down in front of your newspaper/computer/sports weekly, you're all business.

Fast forward to Sunday night. After watching your games and highlight shows, you ask yourself over and over, "What went wrong? I put in some quality handicapping time, and was confident in my wagering. Why am I only at 40 per cent?"

If the above scenario sounds even remotely familiar, be assured that you are not alone. You are a part-time handicapper with unrealistic expectations of yielding huge profits. Handicapping NFL and college football is an exercise in discipline and time management. To put it plainly, you reap what you sow. If you've put in an hour of handicapping for the week, your results will reflect that. Some handicappers feel that cramming is the best approach: spending an entire evening studying all available info and stats. However, the most successful method is to build a schedule around your work and family obligations, allowing yourself a substantial amount of uninterrupted handicapping time each day.

On Monday of each week, your timetable should include reading full accounts of the past Saturday's college games and Sunday's NFL games. Your local newspaper's brief summaries won't cut it. Online resources provide full play-by-plays of each game, which will give you vital information on a given team's performance, regardless of the final score. Monday should be spent exclusively on bringing yourself up to speed on everything that's happened during the past two days.

Tuesday's agenda should be dedicated to looking at the stats and numbers from games played, in addition to studying relevant trends. Pay particular attention to turnovers forced and committed, and to rushing and passing yards.

Mid-week, occupy yourself with reading quotes from coaches and players, which will give you an idea of how a certain team is doing both mentally and physically. The NFL's injury report is usually made on Wednesday. Be cautious though, because some teams are more forthcoming with injuries, while others can be somewhat deceptive. Midweek articles can also be very valuable. Gain insight into a team's upcoming performance based on comments made by coaches and players.

Your Thursday schedule should include checking out line moves. Factor in injuries, illnesses, and suspensions, as well as public opinion based on hunches. If, by early in the day, you're not feeling confident about the evening college game, save your time and money for the upcoming weekend games.

By Friday, you should be down to tying up loose ends, while remaining up-to-date on any last-minute injuries and line moves. By now, you should feel confident in your picks and wagering amounts.

On Saturday and Sunday, be sure to watch as many games and game highlights as you can. No amount of stats or articles can replace an actual eyewitness account of how a team played.

By following a strict daily schedule for handicapping NFL and college football, you should see a definite improvement in your wagering revenue. Handicapping is hard work, and very time-consuming, but if you resist the so-called "short-cuts" and put in a significant amount of studying time, you won't find yourself shaking your head on a Sunday night, wondering, "What went wrong?"

They have earned extra money and they have enjoyed their favorite game. If you love football and you want to try your luck on football betting here are some tips for you to get a winning college and pro football picks.

Actually, winning in football betting is not just all about luck. You also need to think and evaluate some things. For instance, you need to assess the results of the previous season of a certain football league. Which teams were able to reach the quarter finals, semi finals and the finals? You may also want to research about each team. Knowing if there are new players or if the star player of a particular team will not play in the season may help you assess each team's chances of winning. By researching on many aspects of the league, teams and players, you will know which team is stronger than the other and you will have a better prediction of the games and league.

Getting winning college and pro football picks can be very difficult. If you are a beginner, you may opt to use handicapping services. It may cost you some bucks but if you get it from reputable sites, you will surely make huge profits. Getting a good and reliable handicapping service is one of the secrets that can make you grow your betting investments. Make sure to choose a handicapping service carefully. Avoid scamming handicappers. Reading reviews written by other bettors may help you find a reliable handicapping service.

Most handicapping services are based on great amount of information. The handicapping services will research if there are old players who are injured and cannot play this season, if there are new players, etc. If you do not want to spend any cent on handicapping services, you may opt to do this research by yourself. However, this may need a lot of time.

Research is the best key to getting the winning college and pro football picks. However, you also need to have the skills for money management in sports betting. Even if you do not have the best football picks but if you know how to manage your money very well, you will surely gain profit and will not lose a great amount of money. Make sure to place same amount of wagers in all games and do not bet it all in one game. You will surely get a lot of profit from football betting if you have a good betting system combined with a good handicapper.

Medicus Driver - Is the Medicus Driver a Legal Golf Club?

The Medicus Driver is the best selling golf training aid ever. The Medicus Driver, along with the Medicus 5-iron, and Medicus 7-iron have a huge fan following among all golfers, both amateur and professional. The fact that they're hittable golf swing trainers gives them even more appeal versus other golf training aids.

I've seen many golfers over the years use Medicus golf clubs at the driving range. I've even seen golfers pull out their Medicus Driver as a way to groove their swing on the golf course, as they wait to take their next tee shot. Many golfers wonder though, "Is it legal to carry any of the Medicus dual hinge clubs in your golf bag?"

In a word, the answer is NO. Let me repeat myself, the answer is NO. The Medicus dual hinge golf clubs are not legal to use during a round of golf, per the rules of golf set by the USGA.

As we've seen in so far in 2010, knowing the rules of golf is important. 2010 has been an unusual year in golf. With Tiger being off his game this year, it seems that the whole golf world has been turned upside down. This year has been the year of the rules violations. In fact, several notable rules violations have taken place in just the last year alone.

In the past year, we have seen a startling lack of judgment on the part of many very well known professional and amateur golfers. Notable rules violations just this year include:

1. Dustin Johnson grounding his club in a "sand trap," causing a two stroke penalty. This caused him to miss the playoff for the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits.
2. Jim Furyk failing to wake up due to a dead cell phone battery, missing his tee time for the Barclays Pro-Am. The result was tournament disqualification.
3. Julie Inkster using a weighted doughnut during the LPGA Safeway Classic. This penalty resulted in disqualification.
4. Jerry Rice (NFL Hall of Famer) had his caddy use a range finder during a Nationwide Tournament. The result - You guessed it, tournament disqualification.

While the Dustin Johnson and Jim Furyk violations were more talked about at the water cooler, for our purposes the two examples of rules violations that apply to the Medicus are the Julie Inkster and Jerry Rice disqualifications.

Julie Inkster, an LPGA Hall of Famer, was disqualified from the LPGA Safeway Classic for using a weighted doughnut on her 9-iron to keep loose, as there was a 30 minute wait on the number 10 hole. Using the weighted doughnut is fine if you're hacking around on a Sunday with your friends. We've all been there. You're in a groove, feeling good, and then you get stuck in a golf cart traffic jam, usually at a par 3. You want to keep loose, to keep that groove going. When you're playing in a tournament though, the USGA's Rules of Golf are in full effect. Remember, if you're playing in a tournament, you must read the rules.

So what makes the Medicus Driver an illegal golf club? The Medicus Driver, Medicus 5-iron, and Medicus 7-iron all violate USGA Rule 14-3. Rule 14-3: Artificial Devices, Unusual Equipment and Unusual Use of Equipment specifies that the penalty for breaking this rule isn't one stroke or two strokes. The penalty is disqualification.

To read the full rule, visit the USGA's official website here: http://www.usga.org/Rule-Books/Rules-of-Golf/Rule-14/#14-3

The basic language of the rule is, if you're using something to gain an advantage on the golf course, other than USGA approved golf equipment, chances are you're using a piece of equipment that breaks the rules.

Pros aren't the only ones who break the rules. Earlier this year, Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice was disqualified from a Nationwide tournament when his caddy used a range finder to measure yardage. This was also a violation of Rule 14-3.

While yardage books are allowed, range finders are not. The same is true for those hot new GPS devices and smart phone apps as well. Using any of these will get you disqualified based on rule 14-3. So what can we do as amateur golfers to learn from these high profile mistakes? The number one thing to do is familiarize yourself with the rules of golf. Remember, while many training aids are designed to help the weekend golfer improve their scores, keep in mind that many are not legal to use on the golf course. This is per the rules stated by the USGA. This means that use of any of the Medicus Dual Hinge Swing Trainers while on the course is a rules violation, resulting in disqualification.

Therefore, you don't want to become dependent on training aids and other devices while on the golf course. Training aids are for practice, not for real rounds of golf. I am a strong believer in using training aids, especially the Medicus Driver, as it's helped improve my scores immensely. But training aids have a time and place. That time and place is on the driving range, and in your back yard. You don't want to use training aids during a round of golf. Basically, it's cheating, even if you feel that you don't really gain any sort of distinct advantage by doing so. Also, make sure that any equipment you use is approved for use on the golf course by the USGA. The Medicus also has weighted swing trainers as well, and all of those are also illegal clubs, except for the Power Maximus L-Wedge, which has been USGA approved for use on the golf course.

When you're playing with your regular foursome, do any of them really care that you're breaking the rules by using a Medicus, a range finder, or some other training aid? Probably not. But you must remember this rule when you play in a tournament. Your tournament playing partners won't be as forgiving as your regular foursome. This is especially true if you finish in the money. Leave your Medicus and any other training aids at home, otherwise you may fall into old habits and use the training aid during the tournament, violating USGA Rule 14-3. If you happen to just throw your Medicus Driver in your golf bag but never use it, you may be in violation of another USGA Rule.

Having an extra club in your bag would violate USGA Rule 4-4: Maximum of 14 Clubs. The penalty for carrying an extra club in your bag is also disqualification.

To read the 14 Club rule, click this link: http://www.usga.org/Rule-Books/Rules-of-Golf/Rule-04/#4-4

Do yourself a favor when you play in a tournament, especially if money is involved, leave any golf training aids at home. When it comes to tournaments, just remember, training aids are a big NO-NO!
