Super Bowl - Eli Manning's Mojo and A Perfect Season After All

Super Bowl finished, confetti swept aside, perfect season completed by the New York Giants. The title of "Perfect," beaten out of the New England Patriots for 60 minutes during the Super Bowl, now rests squarely on the head of the new kings of the NFL, the New York Giants.

The game became the second highest-rated television show in United States history, second only to the final episode of MASH. MASH was a great show, but were they giving free cheese with that final episode? Hawkeye, you've still got it! It seems that MASH was the only unit that could beat Big Blue this year. Hot Lips aside, over 97,000,000 of your closest friends watched the Super Bowl with you.

If anyone would have told you a month ago that the New York Giants would blow through the playoffs, on the road, as the lowest-ranked NFC playoff team to ever make the Super Bowl, well...you would have looked at them funny and crossed the street.

The New York Giants beat down the most prolific NFL offense in history, the New England Patriots, they of the 589 points and 50 Tom Brady touchdown passes. The New York Giants defense bruised ego and body of the normally unflappable Brady, slamming cocksure into unsure.

The script, which would have been rejected by Hollywood standards as too unrealistic, featured a young Eli Manning turning his professional career around seemingly overnight, gaining confidence in a losing effort to these same New England Patriots in the last game of the season.

Unstoppable on the road this year, when the ball fell in Times Square the Giants kicked into a gear that Tampa Bay, the Dallas Cowboys, the Green Bay Packers, and yes, even the New England Patriots could not endure.

Congratulations to a team that came from nowhere, NFC playoff afterbirth, to slay the best the NFL could offer. In a word...perfect.

Four Different Baltimore Pro Football Teams Have Won Championships

Winning the championship is the primary goal of any football team, or any sports team at all really. There is only one reason to go out and play and that is to win the championship. A championship season is not only rewarding to the players that duke it out on the field, but also to the fans that root them on. Cities and regions should be very proud of their championship winning teams.

Baltimore is a great football town and professional football has been present there in one form or another for more than 60 years. Many people don't know this, but four different professional football teams have won championships while representing the city of Baltimore.

The Baltimore Ravens - 2000
The last Baltimore team to win a league title in pro football was the team that currently represents the city in the NFL, the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens began as a franchise in 1996, having been active as the Cleveland Browns the previous year. They had a few tough years, but in 2000 everything came together behind a strong running game and an out of this world defense. They ended up defeating the New York Giants 34-7 in Super Bowl XXXV.

The Baltimore Colts - 1958, 1959, and 1970
The Baltimore Colts won championships three times. In 1958, they defeated the New York Giants for the NFL title in what many would refer to as the greatest game ever played. After trailing most of the 1959 title game, the Colts would eventually score 24 unanswered points and defeat the Giants in a rematch of the previous year's championship game by the score of 31-16. The Colts won their third league title in 1970 when they beat the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl V by the score of 27-17. Technically, the Colts have a fourth title as they were champions of the NFL in 1968, but went on to lose Super Bowl III to the New York Jets of the American Football League before the two leagues merged.

The Baltimore Stars - 1985
The Stars franchise had played the first two seasons of their time in the USFL in the city of Philadelphia. The team was moved to Baltimore for 1985 and though they weren't as successful as they had been in the past, they were able to make it into the playoffs. The magic was still there though and they marched through the post season and would win the last championship game in USFL history by defeating the Oakland Invaders.

The Baltimore Stallions - 1995
The Canadian Football League expanded into the United States in the mid 1990's, and one of the cities that got a team was Baltimore. In 1995, their second season, the Baltimore Stallions not only won their division, but they became the first team based in America to win the Grey Cup as champions of the Canadian Football League. The team was gone the next year as they were moved to Montreal and renamed the Allouettes.

The fact that they are a great team is not Baltimore Ravens trivia, it's a fact. Finding out little known information about them can be fun. You can use it to impress your friends, win bets, or just for your own personal enjoyment.

There are some very good sources out there for quality football trivia, and they are easy to use too. As a fan of a team or player, you yourself know how fun it can be to learn about some of the lesser known things in the world of football. Football trivia and little known facts are often the best part about the game.

NFL Basics - Handing Off the Ball, and Fumbles

Basics to football hand offs

Handoff skills can secure yardage on the field and increase your overall success. We will explain this in a common scenario between a quarterback and a running back. A running back at the start of a hand off should give the quarterback a target by opening up his arms that are in front of his chest enough to allow about one and a half footballs in. Once the quarterback has placed the ball in the pocket, or opening, the running back immediately clamps down on the ball protecting it and holding on to it. As the running back leaves from the handoff he needs to stay low to react quickly and again to protect the ball.

Practice can help turnovers

There is a golden rule in football defense, get the ball to the offensive team as quickly as possible. Forcing a fumble is one of the quickest ways that you can turn the tides and retain possession of the football. This drill practices with two players. Have the defender move up on the offensive player, trust his arms back and then forward with his fists clenched. As the offender runs ahead of the defender, have the defender bring his clenched hands up quickly, and forcefully, as he aims his hand at offender's football. Start the drill slowly, and reward for a strong tackle that effectively tackles and makes an attack to dislodge the offensive players grip on the ball.

Conditioning Drill: Up Downs

Up downs is an excellent conditioning drill that will improve reaction time and endurance. Players will start this drill by running in place as fast as they can, keeping their knees high as possible. At the coaches signal the players will drop to the ground and do a push up, and then quickly get back up and start running again. This drill is an excellent workout and should be worked in slowly at first and then increased in intensity and length over time.

Protecting the football as you run

You can't run with the football until you have learned some basic ball security measures. Nothing is worse for your offensive team then turning it over carelessly to the other team in a fumble. A great way to teach tight ball security is with four points. First grab the football with your carrying hand with the tips of the football being covered with your fingers. Second, wrap your forearm completely around the football. Third point is to have the ball held tight against the bicep to prevent defenders from punching up through from behind. Last point is to hold the back of the football right up against the ribcage and as you run keep it high and tight. Practice holding the football and having defensive players try and knock out the football by any means possible. By reducing the risk of a fumble you will increase the offensive strength in effectively driving across the field and scoring touchdowns.

Who Has The Colts Peyton Manning Thrown The Most Touchdown Passes To?

Peyton Manning came out of the University of Tennessee and immediately started paying dividends for an Indianapolis Colts team that was coming off of a lot of down years. The team didn't immediately experience massive success with Manning under the center, but they got better and better each year until they were yearly considered one of the best teams in the league. They have had seasons where they just barely made the playoffs, years where they have made deep postseason runs, and they have even had a season that ended in a Super Bowl victory.

Manning has made his name throwing touchdown passes, a lot of them. He seems to throw just as many mid range touchdown passes, ones inside the ten yard line or inside the twenty, as he does those from long range. This has been somewhat due to the amazing receivers that he has been blessed to play with. Who of those receivers has he thrown the most touchdown passes to over the course of his career though?

It should come as no surprise to many football fans, especially fans of the Colts, that Manning's favorite touchdown target over the years has been wide receiver Marvin Harrison. Harrison came into the league just two years before Manning and the two were allowed to mature and develop together until they were both considered elites at their position. During their days playing together, Manning and Harrison hooked up on 112 passing touchdowns. This is not only the most in Colts history for one quarterback - receiver duo, but the most in NFL history.

Some of the other great receivers that Manning has thrown touchdown passes to over the years include Marshall Faulk, Reggie Wayne, Ken Dilger, Joseph Addai, Pierre Garcon, Edgerrin James, and Austin Collie.

The fact that they are a great team is not Indianapolis Colts trivia, it's a fact. finding out little known information about them can be fun. You can use it to impress your friends, win bets, or just for your own personal enjoyment.

Are You A Leader Or A Manager?

First of all, I want to define both. Simply put, leadership is influence. This is the best definition of leadership I have ever heard. It comes from John Maxwell's book, "The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership."

A portion of management is leadership, but management also involves planning, coordinating, controlling and organizing resources. This definition comes from an online article, which you can check out for yourself at managementhelp.org/mgmnt/defntion.htm

Now, I want to reveal to you the differences between a manager and a leader. The manager administers, the leader innovates. The manager is a copy: the leader is an original. The manager focuses on systems and structure; the leader inspires trust. The manager has a short-range view, the leader has a long-range perspective. The manager asks how and when, the leader asks what and why? The manager has an eye always on the bottom line: the leader has an eye on the horizon. The manger initiates, the leader originates. the manager accepts the status quo; the leader challenges it. The manger is the classic good soldier; the leader is his or her own person. The manger does thing right, and the leader does the right thing.

The above paragraph comes from the online article, "Leadership in the Workplace," by Brooke Sheldon. You can see the entire articles by visiting txla.org/pubs/tlj75_4/work.html

Let me give you an example of how leadership and management work. I'll put this into football terms. The manager would be the coach, and the leaders would be the quarterback, the veterans of the team and the team captains. Every NFL team has talented players, but why do some teams make the playoffs and most don't? It boils down to the right mix of management and leadership.

As a coach (manager), you have to know which players to play and when. Another facet of coaching (managing) is knowing the strengths and weaknesses of your players (employees), focusing on those strengths and correcting the weaknesses.

The key players (leaders) of the team need to lead by exceptional example. The key players (leaders) need to inspire, influence, affirm, assist etc.

The football team scenario is a good example of how a business should run. An NFL team is a business. The team has a President/CEO, board of directors, managers and players. A corporation has the same structure, but the players are the employees.

If your business is lagging, you need a change. Management needs to be more effective. Leadership either needs to change or leaders need to be raised up. Hope this articles helps make 2008 a much better year than 2007.

How to Pick a Winning Fantasy Football Team

So, you're wondering what goes into drafting a top-notch fantasy football squad huh? We'll that's surely something open to debate as that if you ask 10 different so-called experts, you'll probably get 10 different answers.

With that in mind, I have been running a fantasy league for about a decade now. While I can't tell you that I've won every time, I can assure you that my teams have consistently made the league playoff round and I have won 2 league titles. That's not too bad. That said, I'd like to offer up my strategy for building a competitive fantasy team.

Fantasy football has been around for decades. But, with the advent of the Internet, researching potential players for your team has become much, much easier and quicker. You can find the newest information online regarding injuries, suspensions, trades and just about everything else almost instantly. Take advantage of this.

1. PLAYER RANKINGS

First and foremost, you'll want to look into player rankings. One of the best ways of doing this is through a simple search on the web. I'd look for rankings done by established and reputable sources like ESPN, Sport Illustration, NFL.com, CBS Sportsline and such. But, don't rule out consulting one of the other listings that may not be among the names you're familiar with. They sometimes offer a fresh prospective that can be very useful.

2. DRAFTING

Drafts usually happen in one of two formats, live or auto. Live drafts are conducted in real time while auto drafts use your own player rankings to select your players automatically when your pick comes up in the order. Either way, a good approach is to take the player rankings you researched and select a number of players for each position that you would like to have as possible additions to your team. Create a list and use this as your intended drafting order.

Also make sure to avoid drafting too many players from the same team of teams that might have byes on the same week. You could end up with a disastrous shortage of players for a crucial match.

3. PLAYER VALUE

There are many different formulas for scoring in fantasy leagues. However, one rule generally remains the same. The players on which you should put the most emphasis are running backs. This is why most overall ranking systems that aren't done by position have a large number of running backs as the top ranking players.

Generally, you should emphasize positions in order of scoring value which from top to bottom would be running backs, quarterbacks, wide receivers, tight ends, defenses and finally place kickers. Although some might argue it a little differently, i.e. flip quarterbacks and wide receivers or to move defenses up to third on the priority list, this should give you a pretty good indication.

4. DON'T BREAK BUT BE WILLING TO BEND - THE RULES

While generally running backs should be your first pick, it is not unheard of to choose a wide receiver or quarterback first overall. There is nothing written in stone that says you have to have every player on your potential draft list being one of the top 5 or 6 guys according to researched rankings. Look for a possible breakout star here and there. You could end up with a pleasant surprise.

In 7 Minutes the Eli Manning Era Could Have Ended

NFL playoff 2010

An ending to what could have been the biggest trade blunder in the history of the New York Giants nearly came crashing down on Sunday as the Giants trailed the Bears 16 - 7 with less than 7 minutes to go.

Giants QB Eli Manning has struggled for the better of the last 6 quarters he has played. His timing has been off and his decisions have been atrocious at best. Fast forward to Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears and you would have hoped young Eli would work himself out of the slump he was in.
For the first 3 and half quarters Eli Manning looked more like the remnants of Dave Brown, an offense that could not score, while the defense doing everything they could to keep the team in the game.

Throwing two bad interceptions, including one in the red zone, and fumbling the ball away when no one even hit him, Eli Manning's QB career, the Giants playoff lives and Tom Coughlin's future all laid in the balance of mistakes that were now magnified. As Joe Buck said during the broadcast, with each passing second and the Giants staring down defeat, the NY Media and the fans were licking their chops to scream at Giants ownership, that it might be time for a change.

Now in most cities, (even had they lost the game, would still be the #5 seed in the playoffs), the media frenzy, would not be this great. However, this is New York, where a guy can hit 50 home runs and the fans can't get him out of town fast enough.

With all of that in the balance. And all of the pressure beating down on his shoulders, Eli simply drove down the field, over 70 yards two times to score two touchdowns and now all of that bad play and all of those "oh no, here we go again emotions" are swept under the rug, at least for one more week.

In the final 7 minutes of the game, it was the Eli Manning that we all saw against Denver a few years back, and the Eli that we had all hoped the Giants mortgaged their future for. And it is the complete package of Eli Manning that frustrates Giants fans everywhere, because you just don't know which one will show up.

In week 1 against Dallas, he looked like a big time QB ready to step up this year. Then last week against Minnesota he looked like one of the worse QBs in history. No one can quite understand why he does his Jekyl and Hyde routine on a week to week basis, but we can all agree, we need to see more of what we saw in the final 7 minutes against the Bears.

One thing is for sure, the kid rose up in a big time situation, with a lot of people's jobs on the line. How did he respond? All he did was drive twice down the length of the field, and win the game.

Fantasy Football Picks - How Many Quarterbacks is Too Many on the Roster?

Where you wondering how many quarterbacks you should plan for when creating your fantasy football picks? The answer is generally related to whether you are in a league that starts one or two quarterbacks and the size of your roster. Generally, the answer to this question is usually three, but you could do better with two.

Standard leagues only require one starting QB, so my question is, why would you need three? You could even think about not even keeping two? It all depends upon the situation of your team and situation of your league.

Here's what that means: You have two quarterbacks on your roster. You also have a RB and WR that you really don't think you are going to need and aren't performing well. Team A has a QB who just got injured and the other QB on his roster has a bye. If possible, you may want to sweep up the QB who is playing this week and stash him on your roster to make Team A have to choose another option for the week. This is a situation where keeping three QB's on your roster might be acceptable, but it is certainly not the norm.

Another reason you may want to consider keeping three QB's is in the event that the talent pool at the other positions isn't that great. There are leagues where you can be in a draft and by the time it gets to the final three or four rounds, there are no RB's or WR's really worthy of taking a chance on. This is a case where picking up or drafting a third QB may be beneficial, but overall, the answer is still, three is too many.

When evaluating your fantasy football picks a good backup QB is usually all you need. The only thing to keep in mind is not to draft a QB who has the same bye week as your starter. This is fruitless. You are hopefully only going to need your backup QB once a year. This is why keeping three is useless, unless there is a real good reason for it.

This is also why some people believe in the theory of only carrying one QB. A big part of this strategy is, again, who is left on the waiver wire. If there are two or three decent QB's left on the free agent market, you can just pick one up when your QB has a bye, so it might not be a bad thing to carry only one QB.

The question becomes, is your roster full of players that are better than anyone left on the free agent list? Remember, the ultimate goal in fantasy football is to build a team. You want to obtain the best players that it is possible for you to have at every position. Since there are more choices in receivers and running backs, it may not be smart to waste a roster spot on a third QB.

In leagues that start two QB's, you will almost always want to carry three QB's, although sometimes two is acceptable as well. First of all, let me point out that you should really think twice about any league that has more than 10 teams and requires two starting QB's.

There are only 32 teams in the NFL. If you have a 10 team league and everyone has to start two QB's that leaves 12. If everyone has one backup, that's 30, leaving only two starting QB's on the waiver wire. Again, making sure your QB's don't have the same bye week is absolutely crucial. This is why even in ten team leagues there will likely be a restriction placed that no team can carry more than three QB's.

Also, when you finalize your fantasy football picks, be aware of your bye weeks is critical to having a fighting chance of winning your fantasy league every week. You can see why joining a two quarterback league with more than 10 teams can become a fiasco.

So, to sum it all up for you, drafting and keeping two QB's on your roster is probably the best scenario. While there are circumstances where three could be acceptable. However, three QB's is usually a wasted slot.
