Inside the NFL - Patriots vs. Bears

CHICAGO (AP) -- Bad weather didn't bother Tom Brady . The big, bad Bears didn't, either. He was cool as ever on a snowy, blustery, bone-chilling day, unfazed by the elements and not quite ready to pop the champagne after the New England Patriots locked up another playoff spot. They're in it for the eighth time in 10 years after a 36-7 dismantling of the Chicago Bears on Sunday in which Brady threw for 369 yards and two touchdowns despite the harsh conditions. "There's a long way to go," he said. "I don't think anything's really been accomplished yet. We're working hard. I don't think we've got every problem solved. There are plenty of defenses that have kicked us around this year. We don't sit in here and think we've got it all figured out." So he wasn't ready to celebrate. Nor was coach Bill Belichick. "Good, we got to keep playing," he said. "I'm pretty sure when the end of the season comes, someone will tell us what we need to do." The win was the fifth straight for the Patriots (11-2), and this one was no less impressive than their 45-3 rout of the New York Jets on Monday night. They wasted little time blowing it open, grabbing a 33-0 halftime lead and sending Belichick to his 174th career win. That put him in a tie for 10th place with Mike Holmgren. Brady picked apart the league's third-ranked defense, completing 27 of 40 passes with no interceptions for the eighth straight game. And the Patriots increased their lead in the AFC East to two over the Jets. "It was a ...

New York Giants - Giants in New York!

We all know that when we hear the word Giants, it directly connotes an image of huge and monstrous images in our heads. Childhood stories of big and scary people would be relived and majority would be left in fear and shock. Now that we are of more mature age, we still do recognize "Giants" as big monsters taking on their opponents. But this time, instead of being in fear, we are left cheering for them while they are literally tackling their opponents for a leather skinned ball. Yes, this time, when we say Giants, we mean the New York Giants!

Being a Giant is not so bad. It means you have various advantages against other individuals. You may be bigger in size, more powerful in terms of strength, or even more capable of covering more area those normal sized beings. This would especially be not a bad thing if we are talking about a team in NFL ready to rough it out against the other grueling teams in the NFL.

Believe it or not, this team was originally owned by just one man. A successful businessman, named Tim Mara, bought the franchise for a mere $500. Now, in today's financially advanced times, this would simply sound as chunk change if we're talking about a competitive team in the NFL. But since this was back in the 1920's, $500 was a huge amount of money already. What made things even more financially struggling was the fact that this was also the era where the country suffered from an economic depression, leading to markets crashing in ways which would make any investor cry. Indeed Tim Mara was left unset at this disturbing scenario. But like any made businessman, the successive substantial loses led him to an operative business decision: He handed the business to his two boys. His twenty two year old son, Jack, and fourteen year old son, Wellington, became the youngest owners of an NFL team in the history of the whole league. I think this would stand still in the record books as I don't think there would be anyone younger than the age of fourteen who would own his own team in the National Football League!

But amidst the struggles, the team has risen as one of the National Football League's top teams! The Giants have been winning playoff games and is certainly not taken easily by any opponent. They are very much respected and have indeed lived up to its name as one of the "Big Guys" in the league.

But aside from being an NFL team, you might actually wonder. How influential is this to the viewers and fans that are consistently supporting this team? Well, you might actually consider going through your movie database and search for "The Little Giants". Yes, that is right. Not only did they make a movie with the Giants being a great football team, but they actually start them young! Indeed being a Giant fan is more than just an obsession, it's a tradition!

New Orleans Saints Are Super Bowl Contenders in 2009

The New Orleans Saints have a very talented offense that can take them deep into January without question. QB Drew Brees is playing the best he has ever played and will be a favorite for MVP once the season is over. The 09' season should be a good one for the Saints franchise overall, many expect the Saints to play late in January.

Drew Brees has established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the league - having all the offense threats such as WR Marques Colston, RB Mike Bell, BB Reggie Bush, and WR Jeremy Shockey. All the pieces are in place for the Saints to win many games this season. Will they be just a good regular season team? Will they use all their offense weapons in January when the pressure is on also? Offenses this good don't come along this often so the Saints must make the most of the great players they do have now.

The NFC South isn't as good as it was in years past. The Saints should win the division - if everyone, especially Drew Brees, stay healthy for the entire season. The Saints should have many easy games on their schedule to rack up wins and get a high seed for the playoffs, it not the number one seed. The defense is what the Saints need to keep opponents to a relatively low score - we know the Saints can score in bunches and quickly.

New Orleans has struggled financially the last few years and a good Saints football team is what the New Orleans community needs. We know what happened with the 07' New England Patriots - they were on the verge of the greatest NFL season of all time but were defeated in the Super Bowl by the New York Giants. It uncertain the Saints can be as great an offense as the Patriots were in 07', what will matter is how they execute in the playoffs.

The New Orleans Saints forum is filled with excited Saints fans at RootZoo. All football fans would love the new fantasy football there too.

I apparently stepped on some toes while filming the quality control check for 2010 Playoff Contenders, inadvertently creating quite the controversy in the process. Stay tuned to the end of the video to see what I mean. I'll do my best to get more information on the issue later this week.

NFL Offense and Defense Ranking - Best and Worst Offenses and Defenses, Week 14 Balanced Ranking

This is the balanced offense and defense ranking for the pass and the run. The difference between this ranking and other rankings is that it looks at how well a team performs in each strategic area of the field. Coaches look at the areas that they can perform the best and plan to attack the weak spots in the defense.

Passing Offense

#1 Indianapolis Colts - They are consistent on their ability to throw the ball. Peyton Manning is still one of the best quarterbacks even with the turnovers.

#2 Dallas Cowboys - The Cowboys have had issues this year and Jon Kitna is performing better than people hoped. He has 11 touchdowns.

#2 New Orleans Saints - The Saints are tied with the Dallas Cowboys. The Saints started slower than expected this year and are becoming stronger each week. Drew Brees has 3,634 passing yards and 25 touchdowns.

#4 San Diego Chargers - The Chargers have statistically been on top most of the season. They are starting to slip. Phillip Rivers is a top quarterback with 24 touchdowns and 3,642 yards.

#5 Denver Broncos - This is the bright spot for the Broncos. They can throw the ball. Kyle Orton has 20 touchdowns with 3,487 yards.

#6 Philadelphia Eagles - They started with Kevin Kolb and big expectations. Michael Vick stepped in due to Kolb's injury with a lot to prove. Vick is doing well and is not thought of as a passing quarterback but he is showing he can step up. Vick has 2,243 passing yards and 15 touchdowns. He has also rushed for 6 touchdowns.

#7 Detroit Lions - That is right the Lions can throw the ball. They have also had injury problems at quarterback. Is this a theme this year? Shaun Hill stepped in for Matthew Stafford. Hill has 13 touchdowns and 2,206 passing yards. Stafford has yet to practice this week.

#8 New England Patriots - The Patriots are becoming a dominant team again. Bill Belichick is putting together another strong offense. Tom Brady has 3,029 passing yards and 27 touchdowns. They are using many different receivers this year and Wes Welker is leading with 672 yards and 7 touchdowns.

#8 Cincinnati Bengals - The Bengals are tied with the Patriots for 8th place. Carson Palmer has 20 touchdowns and 3009 passing yards. Terrell Owens is coming into his own, again, with 961 receiving yards and 9 touchdowns.

#10 Green Bay Packers - The Packers have a strong passing offense and with better protection of Aaron Rodgers it will only get better. Rodgers has 3,243 passing yards and 22 touchdowns. Greg Jennings has 11 touchdowns and 944 receiving yards.

#29 Tampa Bay Buccaneers - The Buccaneers have had flashes of dominance this year. Josh Freeman has 2,442 passing yards and 16 touchdowns.

#30 Oakland Raiders - This is the weakness for the Raiders. Who is the quarterback? Jason Campbell was replaced and Bruce Gradkowski is now injured. J.T. O'Sullivan was just signed. It looks like Campbell is starting again. Campbell has 1,439 passing yards and 8 touchdowns.

#31 Carolina Panthers - This is a major area that needs improvement if the Panthers are going to become a playoff contender. Jimmy Clausen and Matt Moore have not succeeded in their roles as quarterbacks.

#32 Tennessee Titans - Still ranked in last place as a passing offense. Five game losing streak and last in the pass go hand in hand. Vince Young and Kerry Collins have both started this year. Both of these quarterbacks have been successful in the past. It makes you wonder what is wrong?

Passing Defense

#1 San Diego Charger - They are only giving up 186.2 yards a game. This is fantastic and they should win more with this type of passing defense.

#2 New Orleans Saints - The Saints are getting better each week. The Saints weakest area is the right side. They are excellent defending the middle of the field.

#3 Tampa Bay Buccaneers - The Buccaneers have lost two games in a row and this is not the reason why.

#4 Indianapolis Colts - The Colts play the Titans tonight and should continue to dominate in this category against the worst passing offense.

#4 Oakland Raiders - The Raiders are tied with the Colts. The pass defense gives up 206.8 yards a game. They are more balanced on their defense. There is not one area that is a huge target.

#29 Dallas Cowboys - The Cowboys are playing from behind a lot and giving up the passing yards is a reason why.

#30 Seattle Seahawks - If the Seahawks want to continue to challenge for the NFC West they need to improve this passing defense. They give up 120 yards a game just on the right side of the field.

#31 New England Patriots - If something is going to hurt the Patriots this is the area that teams can get them. Passing against the Patriots is a safe bet.

#32 Houston Texans - The Texans are sliding and the pass defense needs to step up if they want to salvage this season.

#2 Oakland Raiders - They didn't start off as a power rushing team. They are developing into this. Darren McFadden is becoming a threat. He has 870 yards and 5 touchdowns. The lack of touchdowns is a negative.

#3 New York Jets - The passing game is not the strongest but the rushing game is tops. LaDainian Tomlinson, Shonn Greens and Tony Richardson are all great backs to have. Both Tomlinson and Richardson did not practice but not due to injury.

#3 Philadelphia Eagles - The Eagles are climbing up the rushing offense charts. This is partly due to Michael Vick and his ability to run the ball. LeSean McCoy has 823 yards and 7 touchdowns. Vick has 467 yards

#5 Houston Texans - Here is the offensive strength for the Texans. Arian Foster is having a great season with 1,230 yards and 13 touchdowns.

#6 New York Giants - Another NFC East team that can run the ball. The Giants have Ahmad Bradshaw with 1,013 yards and 7 touchdowns. Brandon Jacobs is a great rotating running back. Jacobs has 577 and 7 touchdowns. Bradshaw did not practice because of his wrist.

#7 Minnesota Vikings - The Vikings have one of the best running backs with Adrian Peterson. Peterson has 1,123 yards and 11 touchdowns. The running game started slower than expected this year and is coming on strong. Toby Gerhart is a rookie that can plough forward. He had his best game last week and a season total of 216 yards.

#8 Atlanta Falcons - The Falcons have Michael Turner. Turner has 1,062 yards and 8 touchdowns. Jason Snelling the second running back did not practice because of a hamstring.

#9 Jacksonville Jaguars - They are on top of their division and the running game is partly responsible. Maurice Jones-Drew is a top back in the league. He has 1,177 yards and 4 touchdowns. David Garrard is a mobile quarterback and has 200 yards.

#9 Tampa Bay Buccaneers - The Bucs are tied with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Several backs have contributed to gain rushing yards LeGarrette Blount has the most yards with 599 and 5 touchdowns.

#29 Denver Broncos - When a team is losing they have a difficult time staying out of the bottom rankings. Their running game has Knowshon Moreno as their top rusher at 633 yards and 4 touchdowns.

#30 Arizona Cardinal - This is a major reason the Cardinals are having trouble this year. It is one of many reasons. Tim Hightower has 519 yards and three touchdowns. The good news is that he is averaging 4.7 yards per carry. Playing from behind does not help the running game.

#31 Seattle Seahawks - A tie in the division and the running game can improve. Neither Justin Forsett or Marchawn Lynch are racking up big numbers this year. Forsett is averaging 4.6 yards a carry and 469 yards for the season.

#32 Indianapolis Colts - If you want to point fingers and the reason why the Colts are suffering here it is. Joseph Addai has 406 yards for the season and only 3 touchdowns.

Rushing Defense

#1 Pittsburgh Steelers - The Steelers have lead the league this season in this area. It is a good area to dominate. Defense can win championships and rushing defense is even better.

#2 Chicago Bears - The Bears are also on top of their division. The rushing defense is a major part of this reason. They dominate in the middle only allowing 10.4 yards a game.

#3 New York Giants - Another team on top of their division with the Philadelphia Eagles. Having a top rush defense should help the Giants get into the playoffs as either the division champions or wild card.

#4 Jacksonville Jaguars - They are leading their division over the Indianapolis Colts. This is a surprise to the league but a top rush defense can explain what is happening. Their biggest weakness is the middle of the field but that is being picky.

#5 New York Jets - The Jets are not on top of their division right now. They are a top team and should make the playoffs.

#28 Oakland Raiders and Washington Redskins - These teams are both tied for the 28th spot. These teams are similar in the fact that they have high expectations with good play earlier in the season. This run defense is part of the reason they are both slipping.

#30 Indianapolis Colts - Struggling this season and this is another reason why. The Colts need to stop the run if they want to get Peyton Manning on the field.

#31 Arizona Cardinals - A team does not want to be on a bottom ranking and the Cardinals are there more often. This is a disappointing season for the Cardinals.

#32 Buffalo Bills - The Bills are a good team with a bas run defense. If this area is improved the Bills will become a top contender in the NFL quickly.

Kansas City Chiefs Training Camp in St Joseph, Missouri - July 29 - August 19

The Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League (NFL) will be holding their annual preseason training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri between the dates of Thursday July 29, 2010 and Thursday August 19, 2010. After holding their annual training camp in River Falls, Wisconsin for many years this will be the inaugural training camp held in St. Joseph, Missouri.

The city of St. Joseph, Missouri has a population of about 75,000 people and is located approximately one hour north of Arrowhead Stadium where the Kansas City Chiefs play eight home football games a season. St. Joseph and by extension Kansas City are located in the northwestern portion of the state near the Kansas, Nebraska, and to a lesser extent the Iowa border. Kansas City, located on the Missouri River, is about a four hour drive on I-70 from St. Louis Missouri which is located on the east side of the state on the Mississippi river bordering Illinois.

The motivation for the Chiefs to move from River Falls, Wisconsin to St. Joseph, Missouri was is in part due to the closer proximity to loyal fans in the surrounding area. Whereas previous coaching staffs and team administrators had rationalized the Wisconsin location as a more secluded area where the team could perhaps better focus without as many distractions from fans crowding the area the current thought within the organization is that a training camp move closer to home will hopefully translate into a reinvigorated fan base after several losing seasons in which the team failed to make the playoffs.

The city of St. Joseph is anxious to host the event as it is expected to bring millions of dollars to the city through loyal fans coming from hours away to see their beloved organization up close and for the first time this season. St. Joseph mayor Bill Falkner has gone on record with the local St. Joseph News-Press stating that he believes the emergence of the Chiefs training camp will be a boost for local businesses. Among the area business expected to see the most immediate gains are restaurants, hotels, and retailers.

The Kansas City Chiefs will hold their training camp on the campus of Missouri Western State University (formerly Missouri Western State College) which is visible from Interstate-29. In anticipation of the Chiefs training camp Missouri Western has built a large indoor practice facility to accommodate the professional organization in case inclement weather like thunderstorms occurs. Missouri Western has its own Division-II football program which will benefit from being able to use the indoor football practice facility throughout the fall football season.

How to Play Fantasy Football - What is the Difference Between Head to Head and Rotisserie Leagues?

One of the first questions that comes up to new fantasy players is how to play fantasy football head-to-head and rotisserie leagues. Here's some of the basics so you can make an informed decision on what is the right league for you.

In fantasy football leagues, head-to-head leagues are when you go up against a different opponent in your league every week. The manager of the team who earns the most points at the end of the week wins. Then the following week your points get reset and you do it all over again. Your league commissioner decides what grouping of total points are used for tiebreakers between two or even three teams.

When you play head-to-head match-ups the experience is really is more of a simulation of the actual NFL experience. What I mean by this is on any given game day any team could pull off an upset. This makes it a lot more enjoyable because you go from a week to week basis and you don't have to wait till nearly the end of the season for the excitement to really kick in.

At the end of the season, each team's win-loss record determines if that team goes into the fantasy football championship. The top teams go into the playoffs in a head-to-head format. Just like in the real pro-football scenario. The team that wins the final playoff wins the season's championship.

In a rotisserie league you don't have head to head games each week. Instead your team's points are accumulated over the entire regular NFL season. Whatever team has the most points at the end of the year is the winner for the season.

Now, let's just think a minute about some of the crazy stuff that happens during a regular football season. Let's say your team is having a pretty decent year, but you had one game where your quarterback threw a load of interceptions. This allowed your opposition to pound the heck out of your team and they won by a lot of points.

Well that single game could cost you the entire season. Remember, whoever has the most points at the end of the season wins the championship in rotisserie leagues. Wouldn't it just bite that your team one every game, but that one game?

With a head-to-head league how you play your fantasy football team is a lot more like the real thing. That's what I prefer to play and so have chosen an head-to-head fantasy football league.

Have the New Orleans Saints Lost Their Fire?

The only team to ever have an undefeated season was the 1972 Miami Dolphins. Since then many NFL teams have attempted to match this seemingly impossible achievement. Of those worth mentioning are the 1976 Oakland Raiders (13-1), the 1984 San Fransisco 49ers (13-1), the 1985 Chicago Bears (13-1), the 1988 Minnesota Vikings(15-1), the 2004 Pittsburgh Steelers (15-1), the 2007 New England Patriots(who actually did have an undefeated regular season and did not lose until the Super Bowl), the 2005 and 2009 Indianapolis Colts, and of course the 2009 New Orleans Saints.

So as you can see, measuring a teams greatness on whether or not they were able to complete a perfect season is not really a proper unit of measure. The Saints however have lost their past two games to what I would consider o be very lack luster teams. Because of this their is reason to question exactly what will happen to the Saints in the playoffs. They have showed a great deal of promise thus far but how could they suddenly lose their spark the way that they did? Was it all a fluke? Are they really as good as we thought they were? Is it some sort of a curse?

First of all the Dallas Cowboys may have not had the season that everyone thought they would have this year but they are still an exceptional football team and the fact that they beat the Saints should not have come as the biggest surprise to any real football fan. The loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers however is cause for some real concern for all Saints fan. With a record of (2-12) going into the game no one, (including me) would have ever thought that the Saints would lose this game.

So, have the Saints lost their fire? That remains to be seen. The one thing that any real football fan should already know and always remember is that any team could be better than the other on any given Sunday...

I am a college student and a huge fan of the NFL and the New Orleans Saints.
